Shakira’s prosecutor is asking for an 8-year prison term!

A shocking development has occurred in Shakira’s ongoing legal dispute in Spain.

According to Reuters, a Spanish prosecutor is requesting an eight-year prison sentence for the 45-year-old “Whenever, Wherever” singer in connection with a $14.5 million tax fraud case.

The prosecutor’s office recently offered the singer a plea agreement that would have resolved the case.

She was accused of failing to pay taxes on her income from 2012 to 2014 by Spanish prosecutors; who first brought the case to light in December 2018. During her testimony in June 2019, the singer vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

The jury turned down her appeal in the case back in May; upholding the judge’s decision that there was “sufficient evidence of criminality” for the case to proceed to trial.

Despite her claims to the contrary, the prosecutor’s document asserts that Shakira resided in Spain between 2012 and 2014. In May 2012, she purchased a home in Barcelona; that she used as a family residence for herself, her partner, and their son who was born in Spain in 2013.

The request in the document calls for a conviction, an eight-year sentence, and a $23.5 million fine.

According to Shakira’s representatives, she “is fully confident of her innocence”.
