Stephen Curry calls for Brittney Griner’s release!
Stephen Curry is requesting Brittney Griner’s release.
The 31-year-old WNBA player, who has spent the last five months behind bars in Russia, was the subject of an emotional speech by the 34-year-old Golden States Warriors; while hosting the 2022 ESPY Awards on Wednesday (July 20).
Steph was joined on stage by Nneka Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins-Smith, teammates on Brittney’s WNBA team.
Brittney is not just a member of the Phoenix Mercury, her Russian team, or an Olympian; she is also one of us, according to Steph. “The team of athletes here tonight and everywhere else; a team that has nothing to do with politics or world war.”
“BG is a WNBA champion, she’s an eight-time WNBA all-star, a national champion in college, an Olympic Gold Medalist, an athlete with fans all over the world; and a human being whose predicament commands our attention,” Nneka said after listing all of Brittney’s accomplishments over the years.
An emotional Skylar continued, “BG has now spent 153 nights being wrongfully detained thousands of miles from her home; away from her family, away from her friends, and away from her team. Even though we are aware that this is not nearly enough to bring her home, we have kept her in our hearts and minds throughout that time.
“We cannot stop fighting for her, we cannot stop believing for her; and we will not stop hoping for the day we can welcome her home safely,” Steph declared in her closing statement.
Since February, Brittney has been detained in Russia after police allegedly discovered vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage.
She recently admitted guilt to drug charges and could receive a 10-year prison term.
